In the spirit of Chinese New Year, a competition of peeling the mandarin oranges was held before class started. The aim is to peel the orange into a shape that would be beautiful to the eyes - in this case, a flower with eight petals. Not very easy, especially since the oranges given were the tiny ones.
I later learned there is a significance to the peeling of the oranges into pretty petals:
Step 1: Peeling of the petals - this reflects the effort we put into achieving our goals.
Step 2: Cleaning up the pith (the white stringy bits on the orange) -this signifies the hardship before achieving success
Step 3: Eating the fruit - this expresses the satisfaction of enjoying the fruit(s) of your labor.
