- Diabetes mellitus is an important public health concern
- Globally there is a rising trend in the prevalence of Diabetes due to many factors such as population growth, aging, urbanization and increasing prevalence of obesity and physical inactivity.
- The International Diabetes Federation predicts that by the year 2025, the South East Asian Region would have the highest prevalence of Diabetes.
- The World Health Organization (WHO) has estimated that in the year 2030, Malaysia would have a total of 2.48 million people with Diabetes.
- This will lead to incased healthcare costs for the nation in spending on medications for just Diabetes, let alone Diabetic complications such as Diabetic kidney disease, coronary disease, strokes, eye disease and others.
- Diabetic kidney disease is the number one cause of End-Stage Renal Failure requiring dialysis in this country.
- The estimated number of patients on regular dialysis is about 18000 at the end of 2007 with an estimated 3500 to 4000 new patients registered each year for dialysis. This number is rising every year
